About

The Gujar Mal Modi Science Foundation was established in 1974 by Satish Kumar Modi in memory of his father, Rai Bahadur Gujar mal Modi. The Foundation is a symbol of the ideals and values dearly cherished by Mr. Gujar Mal Modi (1902-1976), the founder of the Modi Group of Industries and an architect of modern industrial India, who ceaselessly endeavoured to place India on par with the industrially and scientifically advanced countries of the world.

Mr. G.M. Modi always emphasized that Science and Technology had to play a critical role in the overall growth and development of the country. To commemorate his love for Science and Technology, the Gujar Mal Modi Science Foundation was set up with the aim of promoting research in the various fields of Science and Technology and to help find innovative solutions to the various needs of the country. Currently, the Foundation is in dialogue with several research organizations around the world to form an alliance towards this end.

Shri Gujar Mal Modi

Mr. Gujar Mal Modi was a leading Indian industrialist and philanthropist, who established the Modi Group of industries and the industrial city of Modinagar in 1933. A sugar mill in Modinagar marked the beginning of the Modi Group conglomerate, which later diversified into varied fields. The Group has been in the forefront and a pioneer in bringing to India new age businesses and technology.
Mr. Gujar Mal Modi was a born philanthropist and a gifted educationist who took an active interest in the welfare of the community. He made conscious efforts to plough back a large part of the profits for social good. Through his efforts he started scores of schools, colleges, training institutes, hospitals, dispensaries and cultural and sports associations and also created employment opportunities for the blind. The Government of India bestowed him with the prestigious ‘Padma Bhushan’ award in 1968.

Founded in France 50 years ago by pharmacist Roland Mehl in honor of Galen, the father of medical science and modern pharmacology, the Prix Galien supports, recognizes and awards the efforts of scientists, researchers and companies committed to advancing medical innovation with the power to change the human condition. Worldwide, the Prix Galien is regarded as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in biopharmaceutical research.

GUJAR MAL MODI SCIENCE Award

To perpetuate the founder’s memory, the G.M. Modi Award for Innovative Science and Technology was instituted in his name in 1988, to be presented to a leading scientist of India for his/her outstanding contribution towards a research work resulting in new innovative technology. The award, comprising a cash prize of Rs. 2.01 lakhs, a silver shield and a Scroll of Honour, is presented annually in New Delhi on the birth anniversary of late Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi. Over the years, the award has been received by several luminaries from the fields of Science and Technology, who, through their immense contributions, have helped India take giant leaps ahead.
